Obituary for Charles "Coach Hofs" Hofsaes

HOFSAES, Charles “Coach Hofs”, age 87, of Saddle Brook, died on November 9, 2022. Born and raised in the Bronx for 21 years, he graduated from Mount Saint Michael Academy in 1953. Charles lived in Northern Jersey settling in Saddle Brook 50 years ago. Charles served his country in the United States Armed Forces and onto the National Guard from 1958 to 1966. He later played center field for the St. Louis Cardinals, AAA Minor League Baseball team. He was a sales representative for 48 years with Texaco in New York, NY while earning a degree in Marketing from Rutgers University in 1972. Charles retired in 1998, and in his retirement, he worked as a funeral porter with many local funeral homes until 2021. Charles was a parishioner and lector at St. Philip the Apostle RC Church in Saddle Brook, an avid golfer, marathon runner (finishing four marathons), tennis player, softball coach, all-around athlete and a "Super Fan" of all sports, especially High School sports and his beloved NY Jets. One special highlight of his life was when he ran with the Olympic Torch in 1996. Coach Hofs started coaching for the Saddle Brook High School Baseball team in 1981, and easily switched to coaching girls’ softball because of his ability to lead with kindness. He coached softball for Paramus Catholic High School, Ramsey High School for several years, over 25 years with Saddle Brook High School ending his coaching career at Ramapo Regional High School where they clinched the Bergen County Championships. Coach Hofs was the recipient of the Bergen County Women’s Coaching Association Unsung Hero award in 2008. Coach Hofs is a "Legend of Saddle Brook" as he is referred to and hosted the "Hofs Classic Softball Tournament" for the past 10 years in Saddle Brook and Ramapo. Charles is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Evelyn Hofsaes. He is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Janet (nee Rogers), four loving children, Claire Meese and husband Allan, Laura Fernandez and husband Horacio, Michael Hofsaes and Kara Hofsaes, seven adored grandchildren which were his pride and joy, Ryan, Shannon (Kris), Ashley, Alec, Addison, Patrick, and Nathaniel, three cherished great-grandchildren, Alithia, Audrina, and Carter, and a dear sister, Linda Aloia and husband Robert. As Charles always signed off, PTL (Praise the Lord).

Visiting Sunday 2 to 6 pm. The funeral is Monday, November 14, 2022, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 8:30 am followed by a 9:30 am mass at St. Philip the Apostle RC Church, Saddle Brook. Interment George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. In lieu of flowers the family will accept donations to the Charles Hofsaes Sports Scholarship Fund which will support gifted Saddle Brook Athletes, checks payable to the Hofsaes Family.
