Obituary for Mary M. Mastagni (Abe)

It is with deep sorrow to announce the death of Mary Burger Mastagni, of Bordentown, NJ, beloved mother and grandmother, who passed away on April 5, 2023 at the age of 92.

Mary was born on February 1, 1932 in Tokyo, Japan, where she lived until her marriage to Paul D. Burger, of Union, New Jersey in 1956. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ichiro Abe and, along with her brother and two sisters, survived the bombings of Tokyo during WWII. She met her future husband when she was a student in his English class where he taught in the evenings while stationed in Tokyo through the US Air Force. Mary changed her birth name, Masako, to Mary when she was baptized Catholic and granted American citizenship the year she married, and as a devoted military wife lived in Bordentown, NJ and Tokyo, Japan, until retirement and a move to Port St. Lucie, Florida, in 1987.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother. She was married to Paul for 32 years until his death in 1988. Mary married Angelo Mastagni, originally of New Haven, Connecticut, in Port St. Lucie in 1994 until his death in 2008. She is survived by five daughters: Celeste Brown (Richard) of Charlotte, NC, Martha Robinson (Paul) of Bordentown, NJ, Paula Jobin (Richard) of Winter Springs, FL, Christine Ricci of Bologna, Italy, and Patricia Dobis (Sebastian) of Kalispell, MT, along with ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mary is also survived by 2 step-daughters, Bette Posch (John) and Elaine Lamboley (Fran), a loving niece, Keiko Nakanishi, and two nephews.

For thirty years while living in Florida, Mary was an active member and Eucharistic minister at the Holy Family Catholic Church of Port St. Lucie, where she enjoyed many friendships and volunteer opportunities. She returned to New Jersey to live with her daughter, Martha, in 2017. Japanese literature remained a passion throughout Mary’s life.
